About this Item

Temple Melodies was issued in two formats: 12mo for 75 cents and 8vo for one dollar. "The two Editions correspond exactly in all their contents, being page for page the same, and varying only in size of type." Despite what the publisher announced, the 8vo edition is the same as the 12mo only up through p. 209. In the 8vo pp. 210?17 contain chants not found in the 12mo. The indices end both volumes. First edition was 1851, this is the second in the 8vo format. The church image blind-stamped on the front cover is of the Plymouth Church of Brooklyn, New York, Henry Ward Beecher's church. The association with the Plymouth Church is extremely noteworthy for Beecher was one of the engines behind the compiling and publication of this work (as acknowledged obliquely in the preface and made explicit in Lyman Abbott's History of Early American Hymnals). Also, the Plymouth Church's organist, John Zundel, contributed three original pieces to the volume. 8vo. 222, [2] pp. Publisher's cloth, stamped in blind on covers, with a blind-stamped with a tall steepled church center ornament; binding sunned. Underlining in preface; pages age-toned. Bookseller Inventory # 2550
