About this Item

pp. 189-205. and pp. 206-243. Whole volume: 232 x 163 mm. 8vo. iv, 420 pp. Navy cloth, gilt stamped spine. Ex library Carnegie Institution of Washington Mount Wilson Observatory with call number gilt stamped on spine and library blind-stamp on front free end paper. Clean copy, handsomely bound. FINE. FIRST EDITION. In 1920 Back "returned to Tubingen as an assistant to Paschen's institute. There Back accumulated spectrographs of unparalleled quality, including the Zeeman effects of elements in whose spectra Miguel Catalan (working at the University of London) and Hilda Gieseler (working at Tubingen) were then discovering the existence of higher multiplicities (quartets, quintets, and so forth). When Alfred Lande arrived in Tubingen in October 1922, Back made this data available to him. Six months later, in consecutive articles in the Zeitschrift fur physik, Lande published the well-known formula expressing the 'g factors' for all multiplicities as a function of the quantum numbers of the stationary state of the atom, and Back published the data upon which it was based." DSB, I, p. 371. Lande continued this work in Volume 19 of the Zeitschrift fur physik. Bookseller Inventory # S0205
