Synopsis: Reporting to work at an island resort, Megan Chapin has a suspicious accident at the same location where her mother had been killed and realizes that she holds a secret in her memory that someone is desperate to keep hidden.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 7 Up-Meg Chapin is invited to spend the summer working at an island resort owned by her "Uncle" Jack, one-time partner of her father, who dumped her with her aunt after her mother's death. Instantly, Meg's life is in danger. She survives a boat accident, spends a night in an abandoned pit, nearly burns to death in her cabin, etc. It's apparent that the mysterious Jack is somehow responsible for her misadventures. What's less clear, however, is why a wealthy man would want to harm a teenager he barely knows. The tale is heavy on dialogue, much of it shallow and devoted to coy verbal exchanges and glossy physical descriptions. Meg's personal history remains veiled through much of the story; it's hard to care about her. The explanation for Jack's hostile actions doesn't come till nearly the end, and it simply reinforces his cartoon-villain image. The other characters are stereotypical at best-the handsome but devious hunk, the less-glamorous (but well-built) good guy, the wealthy resort guests who befriend Meg, etc. The relentless action leaves little room for breath. Presumably, Meg's reunion with her long-lost father is the point of the story. It's too bad the focus is obscured by silly theatrics.
