About this Item

First edition. A FINE, TIGHT COPY with spine lettering toned but unrubbed. 338 pps. plus publisher's ads, frontis engraving of St. Joseph's Institution followed by three pages of diagrams of the interior of the convent. Firts person account of a novice nun's unpleasant experiences and subsequent escape from the mother house of the Sisters of Charity in the United States, St. Joseph's in Emmettsburg, Maryland. Miss Bunkley's book was quite the cause celebre in the 1850s; her original manuscript was the target of surpression attempts by the Cathiolic Church and wwas fictionalized and published withouit her permission under the title "The Escaped Nun". Charges and counter charges were leveled over a period of time by both Roman Catholic and Protestant hierarchy as well as ranking members of the Sisters of Charity. Needless to say, Miss Bunkley's account was not flattering to the Church of Rome or its female institutions. Quite unusual in such strong condition. Bookseller Inventory # F129
