Book Description London: Geroge Redway, 1884; Worcester, Mass: Press of Lucius P. Goddard, 1890; Boston: C. F. Libbie, Auctioneers, 1892, 1884. 3 vols in 1, 8vo, dark green morocco by L. Braca, gilt-decorated inner dentelles, gilt lettering, t.e.g., others untrimmed. 51 plates (15 portraits and 26 illustrations) and 37 vignettes in the text; clipped extract. The fine extra-illustrated second edition of Thackeray's Essay on the Genius of George Cruikshank in its large paper format, handsomely bound with two rare pieces: a memoir of George Cruikshank by Worcester resident George Gladwin, who was introduced to the illustrator by John Bartholomew Gough (1817-1886). Gough was the famous temperance lecturer who also lived in Worcester and who built a large library that was auctioned in 1892 by Libbie of Boston. A substantial part of the library was Cruikshankiana, which was said to be one of the finest collections of its kind. The hammer prices are carefully noted from lot 333 to the final lot 704, suggesting that the owner of this catalogue arrived at the sale late. The marbled front free endpaper is beginning to separate; otherwise, a fine, handsome copy enclosed in a green cloth clamshell box. Van Duzer, Thackeray, 62; McKay, American Book Auction Catalogues, 4063; OCLC records three copies of the Gladwin Reminiscence of George Cruikshank (Trinity, Wash U. & AAS) and two copies of the Gough sale catalogue (Grolier Club and Marietta College) Second edition of the Essay on the Genius of George Cruikshank; first editions of the two other titles.
