About this Item
Octavo. Unpaginated. With wood engraved, pictorial frames to every page of text, and eight full-page wood engravings, all by W.J. Linton, who gives credit for his inspiration to William Blake and others. Linton, an eminent English author and wood-engraver, emigrated to the USA in the 1860's. He is well-paired with Bryant, as they were both Liberals, Abolitionists, and passionate about politics. Thanatopsis is the best-known poem by Bryant, for years editor of The New York Post. The date 1817 is stamped on the cover, probably because that is close to the date of the poem's first publication in a magazine. This edition probably dates from the 1870s-80s. On the back cover is a blind-stamped portrait of Bryant as an elderly, bearded man. A beautiful copy in green, beveled boards, with a quotation from the poem, Bryant's signature, and ornaments in gilt. A.e.g. Light wear to extremities, and a small library stamp to ffep. A handsome, scarce, edition. Seller Inventory # 010342
