About this title

Book by Stephen Sandy

From Library Journal:

Sandy's work is almost always restrained, yet oddly comforting. Slipping from free verse to couplets to pantoum (a Malay verse form), these intelligent poems owe debts to Coleridge, Wordsworth, Larkin, and Frost, among others. The title poem, for example, recalls Coleridge's "Frost at Midnight," in both theme and cadence: "and I am grateful/ for circuits of there becoming here, the precise/ area, say, of the blue surface of a car/ . . . going brown, running to earth." While other poems revel in lush, unusual description--"Cousin Ben in lemon trunks/ stands guard" as "Pastel toothpicks pin maraschino/ cherries and squared pineapple chunks . . ./ Across the knife-scored checkerboard of fat." With an academic resignation Sandy mourns lost and fading worlds, from the Midwestern streetcars of his youth to the precarious rural paradise of Vermont, where his barn "stands brooding, stalled like an arthritic/dinosaur in the rain." For academic collections.
