About this title
The most comprehensive, up-to-date, illustrated history of American theater ever published, chronicling two centuries of dramatic productions from frontier shows to modern Broadway. 350 illustrations, 125 in full color. From Library Journal:
Theater historian and former theater curator Henderson has written a full-scale, scholarly history of the American theater. Her book differs from similar works (e.g., by Ethan Mordden, Howard Taubman, and Lloyd Morris) in its sound scholarship as well as in its organization and effective use of illustrations. Eschewing the more common chronological narrative, she devotes chapters to the contributions of each of the several categories of participants in the theatrical enterprise (e.g., producers, playwrights, directors and choreographers, actors, designers, architects). There is surprisingly little repetition, and an appended chart relates important figures to each other by decade. The 373 illustrations reinforce the text in a way that none of the other titles can match. Written for a general audience, yet based on broad research, this is essential for theater collections.
