About this Item

This is Volume V (only) of The Comic Theatre from The Theatre, Tragic & Comic series that spanned 14 volumes total (volumes 1-7 comprising the tragic theatre, and 8-14 the comic theatre). Each volume contains an engraved frontis and four plays, separately paged, each with its own special title page and engraved frontis. The four plays in this volume are: The Provok'd Husband; Or, A Journey to London: A Comedy by Sir John Vanbrugh and Mr Cibber to which is Prefixed, The Life of Sir John Vanbrugh (1774; 104pp). The Double Dealer: A Comedy by William Congreve (1774; 84pp). The Constant Couple; Or, A Trip to the Jubilee: A Comedy by Mr. George Farquhar (1774; 66pp). The Miser, A Comedy: Taken from Plautus and Moliere by Henry Fielding, Esq; to which is prefixed, The Life of the Author (1774; 99pp). This volume remains in its original leather binding with gilt lettering against red leather panels on the spine; the front board is present but detached and the spine leather is well rubbed, especially at the ends, as are the board edges; despite all this, the book is actually fairly solid and well preserved. The book opens to the volume's engraved frontis and the text is complete, including the four individual engravings for each of the plays. The pages are generally clean and subtle with only light scattered foxing. Over-all a good, solid copy of this rare volume. Bookseller Inventory # 005420
