Title: Theatrical and Circus Life; or, Secrets of ...
Publisher: Sun Publishing Co, St. Louis
Publication Date: 1882
Edition: First edition.
Thick 8vo. 608pp. Eight full-page chromolithographs and numerous wood engravings in text. Original black- and gilt-decorated blue cloth. Prologue: "In presenting this volume to the public the intention has been to bring the player and the people into closer relations, and by revealing the secrets of the stage and sawdust arena to show that what appears at first to be deep mystery and to many, who are bigoted and averse to theatrical and kindred entertainments, the blackest diabolism, is merely the result of the simplest combinations of mechanical skill and studied art, and it as innocent of the sinister character bestowed upon it as are the efforts of school children at their annual exhibitions or the exercises of a Sabbath School class before a row of drowsy and nodding church-deacons." There are sections on Shakespeare, American Theatre, the dressing room, set design, lighting, "stage charms and omens," illusions of the stage, costume, opera, Chinese and Japanese theatre, minstrels, sword swallowers, jugglers, magic, ventriloquism, circus sideshow characters, the show ring, etc. Spine toned, some light fraying at ends of spine, inner hinges tender, but an internally clean and original copy.
