Synopsis: Book by Meltzer, Milton

From Booklist: Gr. 7-12. Both critical and appreciative, Meltzer's biography conveys a sense of the complexities and contradictions in the president who led his country during the tumultuous first years of the twentieth century. For an older audience than Fritz's Bully for You, Teddy Roosevelt! (1991), this is far more detailed and also much more candid about TR's failures and weaknesses. The man romanticized war, gloried in it, believed his imperialism was bringing the light of American civilization to backward people. His views on immigration reflect the unbridled racism of his time; so do his views on lynching. Yet at various times, he allied himself with both Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois. Roosevelt often supported the cause of labor, and he pioneered a radical land conservation program. With wry wit, Meltzer conveys TR's uproarious personality and the energy and sheer joy of this bragging egoist ("the I was sprinkled so heavily through TR's memoirs that, the story goes, the printer had to order a special supply of the letter"). There's no direct documentation, even for quotes, but a fine bibliographic note discusses TR's own writings, what various people have written about him, and how Meltzer's personal values must inevitably come into play in how he selects his material.
