About this Item

Born, Max (1882-1970) & Courant, Richard (1888-1972). Zur Theorie des Eotvosschen Gesetzes. Offprint from Phys. Zeitschr. 14 (1913). 4to. 10pp. 280 x 198 mm. Original printed wrappers, creased horizontally and vertically, a few small chips, small marginal tears along horiz. fold. Very good copy, inscribed by one of the authors on the front wrapper: "Mit bestem Gruss!" First Separate Edition. In his autobiography, Born describes this collaboration with the mathematician Richard Courant as an attempt at a modest contribution to quantum theory, namely a derivation of the so-called law of E?tv?s, which expresses the temperature-dependence of the capillary constant. Our method consisted in applying Planck's formula for the energy of an oscillator to the vibrations of the surface, in the same way as in the theory of specific heat it is applied to the elastic vibrations. We omitted, however, the zero-point term in Planck's formula which at that time was uncertain. Therefore the quantum effect which we believed we had found is spurious. Nevertheless, I think it quite satisfying that we obtained the temperature coefficient of the E?tv?s constant fairly accurately-it is of course nothing more than an application of the classical equipartition law (Born, My Life, p. 158).
