About this Item
Three Volumes (Tomes) - 1923, 1924, 1926. French Text. Original leather-covered boards with gilt author, title and Tome number on the front of each volume. New leather spines on each volume with gilt title, author and Tome number on calf inserts. The author was Professeur de Tissage (Fabrics) at the Ecole de Commerce de Lyon and at the Societe d'Enseignment Professional du Rhone, where he had been teaching students of weaving from the Lyon silk industry since the 1890s (see the attractive manuscript workbooks produced by his students). The contents of these volumes are printed folios based on Loir's teaching notes and their accompanying materials. They were originally published unbound because they were targeted at students at the various French weaving schools; they reduced the need for the students to produce fine manuscript, heavily illustrated, workbooks. Students probably bought the individual folios as their courses required or as they could afford them. Subsequently, buyers could, if they wished, have the folios bound to their taste. Vol 1: 129pp of text giving a brief history of silk and the silk industry and drawings and photographs of silk textile machinery, then a further 68 Plates containing 195 Figures, mainly coloured, of weave drafts and jacquard linkages for many different fabrics. Vol 2 (354pp) presents detailed decompositions of 100 non-jacquard fabrics including armures, velours, taffetas, satins, reps etc, each including coloured weave diagrams, lists of yarn components, instructions for setting up the loom and samples of the resulting fabrics. Vol 3 (308pp) describes the various techniques of jacquard weaving and has detailed decompositions of 50 jacquard fabrics, including coloured weave diagrams, details of the punched cards needed, lists of yarn components, instructions on setting up the loom and samples of the resulting fabrics. It also has a Table of Contents for the three Volumes plus a list of donors towards to the cost of producing the work, which was considered an important contribution to the continuing health of the Lyon silk-weaving industry. There is a slight but constant browning of pages throughout and the boards of each Volume are scuffed at the edges. Each Volume has the same owner's name in manuscript on the flyleaf, but in Vol 1 the surname has been obscured. This is a Very Good set of this important work. It weighs 19.3lbs (8.77 kilos). Postage quotation on request. Size: 15 x 11. Copyright: David Rigby. Seller Inventory # 000320
