About this Item

1 page, 6 x 5 inches, Oak Hill, no date but most definitely written in 1815 (as Secretary of State) to Colonel Charles Stewart Todd, in full: "Mr. Monroe will receive Col. Todd at any hour, tomorrow, when it may be most convenient for him to call, and with your pleasure, Oak Hill, Spr 5th." Tiny tear along the horizontal fold; tiny chip on the upper right corner. Very good condition. Col. Charles Stewart Todd (1791 - 1871) was the son of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thomas Todd. He was Aide-de-Camp to General William Henry Harrison in the Battle of Thames and in March 1815, he was made Aide-de-Camp to Governor Isaac Shelby, with the rank of Colonel. James Monroe lived at Oak Hill for several months in 1815 and, along with his brother Andrew, listed the plantation as having 35 slaves. The main mansion would not be constructed until 1822.
