About this Item

This medical book was used by Dr. Thomas Deane to record his family's births, deaths and a marriage of one of his daughters. The book lacks the title page. It is bound in period, full brown leather with very worn and rounded corners. Lacks the top 3 inches of the spine. The pages are heavily foxed, well used and thumbed, with some staining. The inner covers have multiple inscriptions of Thomas Deane's name. Thomas Deane wrote the date of 1708 on the inner cover, when he would have been 14 years old. Several pages have family entries in the margins. He records that he was married on Oct. 2, 1718 and lists the births of his 11 children - John, Jean (Jane?), Thomas, Elisabeth, Deborah, Mary, Abigail, Sarah, Deborah (the second), Clark, and Beniamin Woodbrig (Woodbridge?). The children were born between 1719 and 1742. Four of his daughters passed away in September 1736, within a space of 12 days. From another source I find that an epidemic hit several towns in southern New Hampshire, mostly affecting children, with the loss of over 100 victims. Dr. Deane also records the loss of his mother (Jane Scammon) in Oct. 1726, his mother-in-law? in 1729 and the loss of his father in April 1735. From other sources I find that Dr. Thomas Deane was the son of Thomas Deane of Boston and Jane Scammon (1667-1726). His siblings were Mary, Jane, and Elisabeth and (?). Dr. Deane's wife was Deborah Clark (born Nov. 3, 1699) who was the daughter of John Clark and Elizabeth Woodbridge who were married at New Castle, N.H. on June 19, 1694. Dr. Deane, born in Boston on Nov. 28, 1694, settled in Exeter N.H. where his childen were born, and passed away in Exeter in 1768. This book was eventually owned by John Ward Dean, who wrote the family genealogy - "Descendants of Thomas Deane". I have difficulty deciphering some of the doctor's writing, so some names or dates may be approximate. Lacking the title page, there is no date of publication or exact title. I am assuming that this is William Salmon's 1698 work by the number of chapters in this volume and by the page headings. There are 714 pages of the main text with an incomplete preface - lacking some pages. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 11860
