About this Item

8vo. Half rust calf with gilt lettering and raised bands and light rust cloth. xx, 508pp. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece, illustrations, marbled endpapers. Very good. Faintest bit of edgewear. A tight, quite handsome custom-bound early printing of this hefty standard biography. Not only is the binding custom, but there's a fine autograph addition: Tipped in is an Autograph Note Signed from Canby, 1p, 5¼" X 8¼", Killingworth, CT, 24 September n.y. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. Two faint original horizontal folds. Gracious, boldly penned note: "Thanks ever so much for your booklet and your kind letter." Canby (1878-1961) is remembered as the editor (and taste-setter) of the "Saturday Review of Literature" from 1924 to 1936 and author of many works on American literary history. Quite a striking copy.
