Publisher: Bickers and Son, London
Publication Date: 1877
Edition: 1st Edition
Complete 3-volume set. Full blue calf with raised bands, gilt spine lettering and decorations, gilt rules, inner dentelles. xxx, 555pp; xii, 578pp; xii, 701pp. Top edges gilt. Engraved title pages, numerous small illustrations, marbled endpapers. Very good overall. A tad edgeworn, mainly at head and tails of spines, with front hinge of Volume III (only) a bit delicate; internally bright and handsome. Tight, decent first of this edition, "Illustrated by Many Hundred Engravings on Wood, from Original Designs by William Darbey" -- touted on title page as "A New Edition, From a Copy Annotated by the Translator; Edited by His Nephew, Edward Stanley Poole." Lane (1801-76) was an English "Orientalist" and translator whose first translation of the "Arabian Nights" was published in 1840. This "New Edition" was presumably occasioned by his death. From the library of Wisconsin civic leader JAMES M. LYNCH, chief clerk at the Adjutant General's Office during the Civil War, appointed quartermaster general in 1865; he dates an inner flyleaf of the first volume in pencil "Jan 25, 1879.".
