First American Edition. Translated from the Spanish by Mary Springer. Mustard brown cover boards are clean with some wear especially at corners. Inset illustration and title on cover panel and spine are clean and fresh. One 1/16 inch round stain on front panel, otherwise clean. Interior is clean and unmarked. except for pencil inscription, "Feb. 4. Received of W. L. Clark editor, for sending items Every week in the year 1899" on the front free end paper. In mylar dust jacket. Some foxing on end papers and age toning along extreme edges of pages without any impact on text. Binding is solid. ***The Spanish writer, politician, and diplomat Pedro Antonio de Alarcón (1833-1891) is best known for his novels and short stories, which depict in a lively, humorous and romantic manner the customs of the Andalusians, in the region where here lived. This is a very scarce copy of the First American Edition of the English translation of El Sombrero de Tres Picos, published in Spanish in 1874, and considered the author's masterpiece. The novel was adapted into ballet in 1919 by Manuel de Falla and inspired operas in French, German, and English. Bookseller Inventory # 002733
