First Edition . A beautiful copy of Cox's memoir . Brown cloth with elaborate gold and black lettering on the front board and spine with pictorial stamping . Engraved title page with steel-engraved portrait of Cox with tissue guard intact . Red color to page edges all around . The hinges on the large volume have been archivally strengthened and are now tight and all signatures are tight . The interior is clean , no marks except for an 1886 ownership signature on the second free endpaper . Cox's bold " free frank " signature is also tipped to this page : " Samuel S. Cox , MC " . Cox was a member of Congress from Ohio ( 1857 - 1865 ) and from New York (1873 - 1879 ) . He also served as minister to the Ottoman Empire . From the inauguration of Lincoln to Garfield , Cox was a primary player in American politics and diplomacy and this memoir is a very perceptive account of the period . The book is illustrated with eight engraved plates presenting portraits of thirty-six leadres of the period . Many of these portraits have been rarely published .
