The commentary contains detailed information regarding the size and content of the picture, the material of the original scroll, the inscription and the seals. - A very fine copy of this six folios of famous Chinese classical painting, systematically selected from the old masters through a period of 1,100 years, beginning with Yen Li-pen (active 650 A.D.) down to Wang Yuan-ch`i (1642-1715 A.D.), printed by silk screen process on hand-made Japanese paper. Complete in 6 volumes presented in two cases. 300 plates in black and white and colour of which 46 are colour tipped-in plates. Description of each plate in Chinese and English on opposite leaf or on accompanying tissue guard. Each volume is bound in a tradional Chinese string binding with silk covered covers. 44 x 31.5. Lower section of lower cover volume 6 lightly damp stained, lower edge of last 25 pages show a small damp stain on the lower edge which is barely noticeable on the lower margin of the leaf. Cases damp stained and their cloth somewhat torn in places, one toggle loose, but fortunately the volumes themselves are in very good condition. A handsome set showcasing the pictures from "National Palace of Peiping now housed in Taichung, Formosa" many of which had not been reproduced before this limited edition was published. An essay by Chia-Luen Lo entitled "An Approach to the Appreciation of Chinese Painting" follows the introduction by the editor. Number 0581 of a limited edition of 1500 copies. Six volumes softbound Chinese-style in limp brocade and housed in 2 folding silk covered cases as issued. The blue covering is somewhat faded and one ivory clasps is missing, very light foxing throughout. 300 illustrations including 43 in color.The text is in English and Chinese. This is number 1445 of 1500 copies. Due to the size and weight of the set, additional postage will be required. James Cahill worked on this research project as a Fulbright Scholar. Most of the paintings in the National Collection were stored in caves prior to the construction of the National Museum and it was cold damp work to produce the documentation for this monumental effort.
