About this Item

3 Stapled Pamphlets. 8; [12]; [9] pp. The first item, not dated, is an 8-page membership directory of the Degree of Pocahontas Ninovan Council, No. 198 that met the 1st and 3rd Friday at 8pm at Ramona and Newmark Avenues, Monterey Park, California; various manuscript notations in the text update the member's addresses and so forth. The third piece contains the Principles, Objects and Constitution of the Degree of Pocahontas Ninovan Council, No. 198. Some light shelf wear. Very Good. The Degree of Pocahontas is the Women's Auxiliary of the The Improved Order of Red Men, which is a Fraternal and Benevolent Society which traces its origins to the Sons of Liberty, which carried out the Boston Tea Party in 1773. The Order?s official founding dates to 1813, when the Society of Red Men was formed near Philadelphia to bring under one organization the remnants of Revolutionary Patriotic Societies from the eighteenth century. In the 1880s, the Improved Order of Red Men provided life insurance for its members when such products were generally hard to acquire. The Degree of Pocahontas was formed in 1885. In the 1930s, the Improved Order of Red Men claimed a membership of 500,000 members, but its popularity has declined since then. These documents provide insight into the vitality of a Southern California chapter of the Degree of Pocahontas in the 1950s. Bookseller Inventory # VZ10-1
