About this Item

With a Preface by Bernard Shaw. The English Versions by Mrs. Bernard Shaw, St. John Hankin and John Pollock. London: A. C. Fifield, 1911. Octavo, original brown buckram stamped in black foil., with top edge gilt. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Brieux by Cheri-Rousseau. 323 pages, plus ads at rear. A very good copy of the First Edition. With a small ink-stamped "First Edition" at top of front pastedown. Eugene Brieux (1858-1932) was a leading French dramatist, hailed by critics in his day, but whose reputation has since declined. He caused a scandal in 1901 with his story "Damaged Goods," included here, which dealt with the subject of venereal disease.
