Stolper, 89, an economist who taught at the University of Michigan from 1949 to 1982, died in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on April 1, 2002. Mr. Stolper was best known for the Stolper-Samuelson Theorem, done in collaboration with the noted economist Paul Samuelson. This changed the current conceptions about the effect of open trade on the economies of trading nations. Dr. Stolper believed that while trade stimulates economic growth, it is not always beneficial for workers wages" (Austrian Information, Volume 55, No. 5/6, May/June 2002).
