Synopsis: Book by Kotyeva, Larissa
From Library Journal:
Writing from different perspectives, these memoirists reveal different levels of horror during World War II. Heller describes how she and her family survived as Jews around Skala, an area in Eastern Europe that became part of Ukraine. With the help of a sympathetic Ukrainian militiaman, her family went into hiding in various locations that lacked food, clothing, and sanitary conditions. With feeling and clarity, Heller shows how she survived the Holocaust and the suffering and hatred that endured when the war was over. Detailing her life under Russian rule, then German control, and finally democratic rule in America, Kotyeva creates a personal context that allows readers to understand the importance of decisions like the Yalta Agreement to the people of Europe. Finally, in a compelling, instructive story, Michel describes his experience as a Jew in Auschwitz. Besides starving and watching fellow Jews die, Michel witnessed the horrible medical experiments carried out on Jews. He rounds out his book by tracing his life in America after escaping and his involvement with the Jewish Appeal Federation. Individually, the memoirs offer insight into oppression and its impact on entire lives. All are recommended for libraries with a special interest in World War II and the Holocaust.
