About this Item

Group of three items relating to the planning and construction of the Holland Tunnel in 1920-1927. The tunnel was the first vehicular to connect Manhattan (at Canal Street) with New Jersey (Jersey City). It was the first of two vehicular tunnels across the Hudson River, the other being the Lincoln Tunnel (opened 1937). 1) Report of the New York State Bridge and Tunnel Commission 1920. Slim quarto hardcover in black cloth lettered in gilt. 81 pp. with 4 full page monochrome photographic plates, 27 folding plates at rear (maps, diagrams, charts showing the proposed location and routes, proposed vehicular tarffic based on the use of ferries, design details such as exhausts, vetilation shafts, approaches from both sides etc). Deaccessioned from a state library with their perforation stamp on the title page and white spine lettering; interior and plates clean and complete. 2) "The Holland Tunnel: Contract No. 13, part 2 of 3, Land Ventilation Building, River Ventilation Building, Interior Spring Street Shaft, Interior Canal St. Shaft, Interior River Shafts. 1925: New York State Bridge and Tunnel Commission and New Jersey Interstate Bridge and Tunnel Commission. Slim quarto in green cloth lettered in black. This volume consists 52 of folding plates of the architectural designs and specifications. Very good, binding evenly soiled, intertion fine. 3) a pair of toll tickets, perforated but untorn, dated Nov. 20 (19)27, in the amount of .50 cents.
