First edition. Illustrated orange cloth. 268 pages. A collection of fictional accounts of various characters and members of Australian society, including a look at those living on the darker side of society and a somewhat stereotyped caricature of the Chinese. The tales are likely inspired by experiences in Chambers' life in Australia. Charles Haddon Chambers was an Australian born journalist and playwright, settling in England in 1882 and writing and collaborating on various plays, many reflecting Australian themes or characters. GOOD condition with uneven fading and darkening to the covers. Mostly minor soiling, with a few minor stains. Area of discoloration to the rear cover. Moderate scuffing along the extremities. Interior hinge weakening. Text block solid with scattered soiling throughout. Previous owner's signature on the first endpaper. General browning to the paper. Bookseller Inventory # 005436
