About this Item

Yes, this is a mass market paperback with a detachabale dust jacket, complete as made (DJ now in Brodart protector.) Mostly-orange DJ displays a hand holding a Webley revolver at top left (reproducing art of front wrap, which wrap benefits from having been so protected), and further identifies this volume as part of the "Crime-Book Society series / 6d. net." Rear offers a list of 21 Crime-Book Society titles, "Uniform with Hutchinson's Pocket Library / 6d. net" of which this is number 6, indicating this is likely NOT a first printing thus. (In fact, front wrap states "93rd Thous.") Many authors on said list appear forgettable, save (already "the late") Edgar Wallace ("On the Spot" and "Flat 2") the Baroness Orczy ("Unravelled Knots") and the curious ninth entry on the list, "Soho Racket," by one Grierson Dickson. Book itself is near fine with minor curl to bottom right of front wrap and moderate age-browning to page edges; DJ very-good-minus with minor edge wear, small chips to top of spine, and a pair of small waxy brown stains (you can cover them with your thumb) to upper right of front wrap. Book opens with our hero scoring a goal to break a 1-1- tie in the final minute of a thrilling British "football" match, (or -- for American readers -- in one of the world's two most tedious and low-scoring sports, right up there with that thing they do with brooms on ice.) From there, it appears that mysteries, disguises, and a kidnapping ensue, to say nothing of the lugubrious Benny Bannister. The Edinburgh Evening News offers "The story is written in the racy and graphic style for which the author is famed," though what passed for racy in Edinburgh in 1932 others will have to determine. 286 pp. Reduced from $30.
