Synopsis: Tilli, a Blue Spruce tree from Canada, relates her experiences after she arrives in Texas to be a Christmas tree.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-3 Tillicum, or Tilli for short ("because it sounds more friendly") is an anthropomorphic Canadian Blue Spruce that prides itself on having avoided the flaw of vanity despite being labeled the best-looking tree in the forest. Tilli's adventure begins when it is chopped down and shipped to an affluent Texas family to reign over their materialistic Christmas. Consigned to the garbage can after New Year's Day, Tilli remains "as brave as only a Blue Spruce can be" until an indigent boy totes it home (a Blue Spruce is "even brave enough to be cut up into firewood"). It is saved from the stove by the urchin's invalid mother, who prefers to shiver rather than burn such a splendid tree. This saccharine ending caps a disjointed story that lacks sufficient plot interest to capture young readers or listeners. Oppenheimer condescends to her audience by informing them that British Columbia is so named because "it is too big to have just one name," and her message about spreading happiness is overbearing. Lackluster black-and-white illustrations do not redeem the mediocre text. Even a Blue Spruce bred for bravery would quake at the prospect of having to read this tale.
