About this Item

NICQUET, HONORE. Titulus Sanctae Crucis, seu historia et mysterium tituli Sanctae Crusis Domini Nostri Iesu Christi. Antwerp: Sumptibus Andreae Frisii, 1770. 12mo. 224, [16] p. Folding plate. [Bound with:] CORNEILLE DE CORTE. De clavis dominicis. Antwerp: Sumptibus Andreae Frisii, 1770. [36], 158, [19] p. Engraved plates. Contemporary sprinkled calf (hinges showing wear, ends cracked). Folding plate with cellotape repair, early stamps on title page. A good sound copy. Two scholarly works on the crucifixion of Christ. Titulus Sanctae Crucis, by the Jesuit Honore Nicquet (1585-1670), deals with the sign placed on top of the cross of Christ, proclaiming him "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." The folding plate depicts the relic of the titulus at the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Rome. De clavis dominici, by the Austin friar Corneille de Corte (1590-1638), is a discussion of the nails of Christ and the wounds caused by them. The mostly full-page plates include conjectural depictions of Christ's wounds as well as the nails. For Nicquet: DeBacker-Sommervogel V, p. 1713. Bookseller Inventory # 12114
