Synopsis: Toby stubs his toe one morning and his little sister, mom and da, dog, cat, teacher and classmates all feel the results--until Toby makes everyone feel good
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2 Toby wakes up one morning and stubs his toe against the bureau, which makes him so angry that he pops his sister's balloon, making her cry that she hates Toby, which upsets mother so that she drops an egg on daddy's toe, etc. When Toby comes home and sees the remains of the balloon, he thinks of something nice to do for his sister, which sets off another chain, reversing the earlier one and leaving everyone happy. The angry spiral of events is a familiar theme in stories such as Byron Barton's Buzz, Buzz, Buzz (Penguin, 1979), but the upward spiral of pleasant events is a different twist. Although colorful pen-and-ink drawings add a delightful personality to the story, they do not entirely overcome the somewhat monotonous text. What starts off as an interesting story soon gets bogged down with added words in small print and just too many happenings. Still the idea is a good one and children will enjoy hearing this read aloud individually or in story programs, especially with the sound-effect words that accompany each action. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.
