Book Description Cassell, London, 1930. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Three volumes octavo bound in the original light brown cloth with a gilt scarab beetle brooch in gilt and black centre of the upper boards. The cloth is lightly rubbed but there is no wear and all corners are still sharp. The edges and text does, however, have some foxing. Volume 1 (1923) is a fourth impression of 1930; volumes 2 and 3 are first editions of 1927 and 1933. There are decorative endpapers and half-titles to each volume and the set is complete with 104 photographic illustrations by Harry Burton of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Howard Carter (1874-1939) in all at different times he discovered no less than six royal tombs. After the war Carter spent the winters from 1919 to 1922 searching the Valley of Kings but found little till the dramatic discovery of Tutankhamun in November 1922, the greatest archaeological discovery ever made in Egypt: the clearance of the tomb, the packing and removal of its contents to Cairo Museum, took Carter and staff of experts a full ten years to complete; the extensive records, a body of material much of which yet remains unpublished, together with Carter's diaries and papers are preserved in the Griffith Institute, Oxford, to which they were given by his niece Miss Phyllis Walker; Carter was unable to bring out a definitive report on his discovery and only published a popular but detailed account of it - the three volume work that we offer. Arthur Cruttenden Mace (1874-1928) was an eminent Egyptologist who assisted Carter (1922-1924) in the gigantic task of clearing the tomb of Tutankhamun, but after serving two winters thus had a break down of health and was unable to continue. Mace wrote the first volume of this most important work. George Edward Stanhope Molyneux, 5th Earl of Carnarvon (1866-1923) of Highclere Castle, Hampshire was an English excavator and collector who from 1906 excavated at Thebes, where with the help of Howard Carter he made many important discoveries - culminating, of course, in the greatest find of all in 1922. His previous excavations were recorded in a sumptuous volume " Five Years' Explorations At Thebes " published in 1912. He formed a very choice and valuable collection of Egyptian antiquities which were subsequently acquired by the Metrropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Part of the collection is also still at Highclere. He was bitten by a mosquito while in the Valley of Kings in March 1923 and died of the resulting infection in Cairo in April 1923. His sad demise was the genesis of the so-called " Mummy's Curse. ". Seller Inventory # 00010
