Description:

Quarto (5 6/8 x 9"). Volume 1: [6], 296 leaves; Volume 2: [4], 3-312 leaves. Contemporary full calf, with black lettering on spines. All paper edges hand-painted (green dots). Half-titles. First complete edition of the Hebrew Bible published in America. This work is the reprint of the second edition of the Joseph Athias bible (Amsterdam), with introduction and notes in Latin by Van der Hooght. Text without vowel-points or accents (It was not until 1849 that a vocalized Hebrew Bible was published in America (see Darlow & Moule 5168a; Rosenbach 171). This Biblia Hebraica is based on the 1661 critical edition edited by Johannes Leusden (1624-1699), a Calvinist theologian. In 1812 Jonathan Horwitz proposed the publication of a Hebrew Bible using the font of Hebrew type which he brought with him to the United States, but he soon discovered that he was not alone in his desire to produce such a bible. In early 1813, in the face of stiff competition, Horwitz sold the Hebrew type to William Fry and transferred his right to publish and the subscription lists to Philadelphia publisher Thomas Dobson; It were they who printed and published the present edition [Singerman 236, Goldman 4]. Binding rubbed, partly water-stained, and creased along spines. Lettering on spines mostly faded. Head and tail of spines slightly chipped. Previous owner's Ex-libris on inside of each front cover. Previous owner's gift inscription in ink on each front free endpaper: "Presented to John Van Cleve by Dr. A. Dunlap of Rushville, Ill. Dec. 12, 1839" [followed by signature]. Offsetting and minor water-staining to endpapers, fly leaves, and titles. Back endpaper of second volume torn at lower right corner. Bindings in overall fair, interior in good to good+ condition.
