This Biblia Hebraica is based on the 1661 critical edition edited by Johannes Leusden (1624-1699), a Calvinist theologian. In 1812 Jonathan Horwitz proposed the publication of a Hebrew Bible using the font of Hebrew type which he brought with him to the United States, but he soon discovered that he was not alone in his desire to produce such a bible. In early 1813, in the face of stiff competition, Horwitz sold the Hebrew type to William Fry and transferred his right to publish and the subscription lists to Philadelphia publisher Thomas Dobson; It were they who printed and published the present edition [Singerman 236, Goldman 4]. Binding rubbed, partly water-stained, and creased along spines. Lettering on spines mostly faded. Head and tail of spines slightly chipped. Previous owner's Ex-libris on inside of each front cover. Previous owner's gift inscription in ink on each front free endpaper: "Presented to John Van Cleve by Dr. A. Dunlap of Rushville, Ill. Dec. 12, 1839" [followed by signature].
