The book relates his exploits, including his adventures in the west to include cattle drives, Nevada and Utah, with the Pony Express. His Civil War experiences took him into the field against Morgan during that general's raid of 1863. Wells was taken prisoner, he later escaped and rejoined the army to fight in the Atlanta Campaign.
