Synopsis: Drawing on four years of research and in-depth interviews with teenagers, parents, teachers, and social workers, the author presents a vivid portrait of runaway and homeless kids and examines the reprecussions of this growing national problem
From Library Journal:
The author (Journalism, Columbia), who has written extensively on social issues, examines the reasons that over one million youths each year drop out of school, run away from home, and begin a life of poverty and crime. Lefkowitz bases his findings on personal interviews with several hundred of these disaffected adolescents. The overwhelming majority had no appropriate role models and indeed were expected to fail by family, schools, and social welfare agencies. The book concludes with a description of successful job training programs for youths. By allowing these teenagers to tell their own story and by presenting sociological data in an easy-to-read style, Lefkowitz has illuminated a problem of tragic proportions. Recommended for public and academic libraries. Florence Scarinci, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, N.Y.
