About this Item

First edition. 12mo. in full contemporary calf, chipped, peeled and cracked; marbled endpapers (front free endpaper excised). See below for additional condition description. (1) xxviii+223 pp. (1). Extremely scarce work on mid-18th century travels in France and Flanders, generally confined to churches, abbeys, convents, etc, with descriptions and explanations of various customs, religious ceremonies, etc. There is a large section on ceremonies observed on particular days (Candlemas, Twelfth-day, Holy Week, Carnival, etc, as well as various secular celebrations; an addendum section deals with coins and currencies and their respective values in French and English, illustrated by tables; and expenses of travel by land and water with directions to the best inns, inn-keepers names, etc. The lengthy preface deals largely with Catholic superstitions and customs including the viewing of a relic related to the Shroud of Turin, the use of relics for exorcism, etc. While the binding is in poor condition and the front board reattached the text block is firm, complete and relatively clean; there is a die-cut decal of flowers attached to the first blank, a newspaper clipping affixed to the verso of the front blank and another affixed to both sides of the rear free endpaper. Essentially a binding copy. Bookseller Inventory # E9785
