Second issue of the first U.S. edition, dated 1874 (not 1873.) "Very-good-minus" with bumped bottom corner and slight fraying to tail of spine. A small, 4-3/8 X 5-7/8-inch book, stamped in blind to blue cloth of boards and spine, also retaining bright gold gilt titles to front and spine. Three corners missing from dark green paper of front pastedowns. Tissue guard remains in place over frontispiece depiction of Verne's touring boat, Le Saint Michel. No internal illustrations. The best known adaptation remains the 1956 film "Around the World in 80 Days," starring David Niven as Fogg and Cantinflas as Passepartout. In 1963 the inevitable parody arrived in the form of "The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze." Michael Palin's 1988 seven-episode BBC series was in fact a non-fiction travelogue in which Palin, a renowned traveler as well as comic actor, attempted to duplicate the original route as closely as possible without the use of aircraft. Pierce Brosnan starred in a 1989 miniseries; a 2004 Disney live-action film starring Jackie Chan as Passepartout and Steve Coogan as Fogg does not seem to have eclipsed the earlier versions. 291 pp. Reduced from $180.
