33pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 19 drawings and 2 text maps, salvaged from damaged issues of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Volume XXVIII, Nos. 4 - 6, August - October, 1884. An archaeological investigation of the journey of Ulysses from Homer's Odyssey. This is the original appearance of these 3 articles that would be collected and privately printed in 1887, and also published by Houghton, Mifflin, Boston, 1888. Illustrations include the route of Ulysses, Ithaca and adjoining islands, the West Coast of Scheria, the meeting of Ulysses and Menelaus from an old Greek vase, Greek Boats and Rostrum of Roman Galley, Corfu from the King's Garden, the Fort of Phorcys and Neriton from the mouth of Ulysses' cave, Raven's Cliff and the Fountain of Arethusa, the site of Ithaca - Port Polis, a stone inscription found at Polis, the school of Homer, a view of Same from the West with details of Pelasgic and Hellenic walls, Crane from the seashore, a distant view of Pale from the Citadel of Crane, a view of Zante, the Citadel of Cerigo, and the landing place of the Cyprian Aphrodite or Astarte.
