About this Item

"Whether in architecture, interior decoration, pottery, metalwork, textiles or gardens, the design concepts of Japan's artists and craftsmen have exerted a profound influence on form and ornametation throughout the world. This, the first in a series of illustrated volumes that will explore and reveal the entire range of traditional Japanese design, is devoted to kacho, the 'bird-and-flower' motif that permeates the history of Japanese art. In Japan this motif has for many centuries been an expression of the people's sensitivity to nature, a reflection of the unity of man and his natural environment. Kacho designs are found on a tremendous variety of objects, ranging from Buddhist ritual implements, sword furnishings, and kimonos to paintings and simple earthenware dishes. To present a full perspective of the development of this motif, the authors have chosen supurb examples that date from the seventh through the nineteenth century, many of which have been designated national treasures. The 42 full-color plates and 65 black-and-white illustrations are presented in chronological order, with explanatory notes by four distinguished Japanese art experts, each of whom is a leading authority in his field. Photography is by Mr. Bin Takahashi, Japan's foremost photographer of art objects." This book has 132 pages and is profusely illustrated. The book is enclosed in a slipcase.
