8v0 (22.5 x 13.7). Modern quarter black morocco and marble boards, new end papers. Collation: [6] [ I]-CXI pp + 20 folding engraved plates, 18 numbered I-XVIII and two un-numbered. Binding in very good condition. The original printed paper issue of this work is bound inside the new end papers, retaining the original covers. The text is uncut and partially unopened. Minor dusting present. Book plate of A. B. Muller with coat of arms fixed to front paste down. This is a reprint of v. 7 of Traite de l'électricité et du magnétisme (Paris, 1834-40) preceded by a general introduction. Becquerel was most noted for his work "on the voltaic cell [and]… performed elegant small-scale experiments on the synthesis of mineral substances… Becquerel remarked that chemical synthesis had lagged behind analysis and hoped that through his techniques many naturally occurring crystals would be shyntesized and the balance redressed…for this work he received the Copley Medal."(DSB 1, p. 557) The Traité (7 volumes) was his most important work.
