Recent green pebbled cloth, gilt-stamped spines. Bookplate of Oliver Joseph Lodge. Near fine. SCARCE. FIRST EDITION of La Rive's only book. It was translated into English by C.V. Walker as A Treatise on Electricity, in Biology (London: 1853-58).'' Lodge (1851-1940) was a British physicist and writer involved in the development of key patents in wireless telegraphy. La Rive (1801-1873) was a noted French physicist who taught at the University of Geneva (then French). He was Secretary of the Academy, and "the most important figure in the Genevan scientific community." He was for many ears editor of the Bibliotheque Universelle des Sciences. . . ' in which he issued many of his made publications. It was as a critic of Volta's contact theory of the pile that La Rive made his European contribution (DSB, Vol. III, 35-7). Mottelay.
