About this Item

Velpeau, Alfred A. L. M. Traite des maladies du sein. 8vo. [4], xix, [1]pp. 8 tinted & hand-colored plates engraved by Visto. Paris: Masson, 1854. 210 x 128 mm. Quarter morocco, gilt, c. 1854, with name, D. Hicguet, at foot of spine, a little rubbed, but fine. First Edition. Velpeau is considered by some to be the first medical oncologist, and his Traité de maladies du sein was the most important book of its time on tumors of the breast. He noted that contraction of the nipple was a sign of cancer. Velpeau believed that although cancerous tumors could be destroyed surgically, ''the disease always returns after removal, and operation only accelerates its growth and fatal termination.'' Velpeau also included a systematic study of hypertrophy and ptosis of the female breast, which led to the early attempts at reduction mammaplasty around the turn of the century. His eight plates with their colored illustrations of gross anatomy and marginal line figures of microanatomy are excellent. Goldschmid 193. Wallace 155. Gabka & Vaubel 152, noting that the Traité "was of great importance to plastic surgery and was based on over 2,000 case histories." Garrison-Morton 5771. Bookseller Inventory # 15960
