About this Item

With half-title and leaves of approbations. Full contemporary French calf, gilt fleurons on spine with raised bands. Corners rubbed and worn, lacking front free endpaper. Autographed by the author at the end of the dedication. First edition. The present account relates the author's methods of treatment in an effort to control the symptoms of infectious diseases. Many of his secret remedies were presented here for the first time, with instructions for their use. Helvetius was the first physician to popularize Ipeca (Brazil root) in Europe as a treatment for dysentery; after restoring the Dauphin's health, his father, King Louis XIV of France, funded the publication of Helvetius' discovery. This popular work went into many editions, and was tranlated into many languages. Bookseller Inventory # 2142
