About this Item

Mariotte, Edmé (d. 1684). Traité du mouvement des eaux et des autres corps fluides. Edited by Philippe de la Hire (1640-1718). 12mo. [16], 408 [i.e., 390], [20] pp. Text woodcuts. Paris: Estienne Michallet, 1686. 160 x 90 mm. Contemporary calf, gilt spine, worn, front hinge cracked. Light browning, otherwise very good. "Verniquet" inscribed on title and front paste-down; possibly the signature of the architect Edmé Verniquet (1727-1804). The Haskell F. Norman copy, with bookplate. First Edition. Mariotte, a French cleric, had been asked in 1680 to design pipe for the water supply at the palace of Versailles. "On this assignment he tested both pipes and materials; developed a formula for the bursting strength of pipe; and, in tensile tests of materials, observed their elastic behavior" (Finch, p. 78). The present work, published six years later, contains the summation of Mariotte's work in hydrostatics. Mariotte reviewed the basic properties of air and water; gave an extensive report of the world's winds (based upon data obtained from a chain of weather stations Mariotte had established across Europe); discussed the balancing forces of fluids based upon weight, elasticity and impact; provided five "rules of jets of water" relating the speed of a water jet's flow to the height of the reservoir and the area of the opening; gave the constants necessary for applying these theoretical rules to actual fountains; introduced findings on the effect of air resistance on the path and speed of projectiles; and concluded with a study of the strength of materials, particularly in relation to water-pipes. The theoretical portions of Mariotte's treatise were eventually superseded by Bernoulli's Hydrodynamica, but it remained for many years a standard practical guide to the construction of fountains.
