Book Description New Haven: Yale University Press, 1966. Octavo, cloth (hardcover), red spine label, gilt letters, xi, 303 pp. Fine, in a Very Good, age darkened dust jacket with edgewear. From jacket: Mr. Lijphart demonstrates in this study that the motives behind Dutch reluctance to let go of West New Guinea were subjective and psychological. This case, he says, refutes economic explanations of colonialism. He shows that West New Guinea was an economic, strategic, and political liability to the Netherlands and that its stubborn attempt to hold on to the colony was motivated soley by an emotional attachment to it as a symbol of national power and imperial grandeur. Mr. Lijphart analyzes in great detail the alignment of domestic political forces. He describes the pressures exerted on the government by various interest groups, the role of the press, and the viewpoints of the political parties, and he traces changes in policy that ended in the eventual, inevitable withdrawal. South Pacific, Pacific Islands, New Guinea, Dutch History, Colonization, Political Science. Seller Inventory # qms52
