About this title
The matter-of-fact descriptive title of this interesting little volume on railroading in the pre-Civil War South does not do justice to Alvarez's coverage of the subject. The book is a fascinating and well-written history of railroads and their effect on the economic development of the region, the relationship among the classes and races, thoughts on Jeffersonian democracy, as well as a full account of trains and train accommodations, the technological developments of early railroading and the limitations. The author quotes extensively from travelers's diaries and letters to great effect. With extensive footnotes and bibliography. 221 pages with index.About the Author:
Eugene Alvarez served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He later became a professor of history. He is now retired and enjoys travelling and playing the harmonica.
