About this Item

ASHE, Thomas. Travels in America, Performed in 1806, for the Purpose of Exploring the Rivers Alleghany, Monongahela, Ohio, and Mississippi, and Ascertaining the Produce and Condition of Their Banks and Vicinity. London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1808. 1st ed. 3 Vols. Orig. marbled boards rebacked in period-style gilt-ruled calf with original black morocco spine labels laid down, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Light rubbing to boards, occasional faint scattered foxing, else very good. HOWES A-352, "aa." "Slow travel permitted Ashe to observe many traits of the inhabitants and features of the countryside. His oblique observations persuaded him of the degeneracy in America of both man and beast.[T]he women were 'far superior' to any he had seen in Europe. As for soil, climate, and advantages of nature, Ashe was favorably impressed with the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, and his descriptions are generally credible. The chief reason for his journey was an intense interest in archaeological remains. He uncovered Indian tombs, sought bones of extinct animals, and climaxed his trip by swindling Dr. William Goforth out of a skeleton of a mammoth. Enlivened by misrepresentation and exaggeration, Ashe's account is interesting and higly readable."--Clark, Old South, II, 135. Bookseller Inventory # 66224
