About this Item

Half-morocco over marbled boards, gilt spines, some wear and staining to covers; marbled endpapers, flyleaf in Volume I loose, otherwise interior very good. First edition in English, translated by Mrs. Percy Sinnett from the first German edition, 1856. From the moment one opens Travels in Canada, world renowned geographer Johann Georg Kohl's enthusiasm for the natural beauty of the Northeast mesmerizes his reader. Beginning his journey on the Hudson River in 1855, he describes the shifting clouds by "a sudden glory lights up land and water." With his companions, Kohl travels up through New York, into Vermont, then on into Montreal, Toronto, Niagra, and other parts of Canada. He wrote these charming little volumes "thinking that first impressions of foreign countries may always be of some value." Kohl was correct: surviving copies attest to the usefulness of his interpretations on Canadian religious institutions, native communities, and industry. Kohl (1808-1878) was a German geographer and prolific travel writer. A passion for adventure was cemented during his youth when Kohl studied the great explorers, and eventually led to his travels around Europe to Russia, and then to North America. In the United States, Kohl is most known for his facsimiles of early maps related to the discovery and exploration of the New World. Bookseller Inventory # 15498
