About this Item

In slipcase. Continuation of title: "Containing Observations on the manners and customs of the inhabitants, a description of the lakes, rivers, glaciers, hot-springs and volcanoes; of the various kinds of earths, stones, fossils and petrifactions; as well as of the animals, insects, fishes, etc." Translated from the Danish. Originally published in Danish in 2 volumes in 1772. First English edition published in 1805 by Richard Phillips, London. [Translator unknown; initials only: F.W.B.] This copy is the revised edition of the 1805 edition. ~ Brown leatherette with gilt spine titling and illustration on spine and front cover. Endpapers show maps of Iceland from 1772 edition. 186 pages. B & W copper engravings and color reproductions of authors' original sketches. Index. Matching brown slipcase with gilt titling and extensive gilt illustration. ~~ This volume is in beautiful, clean, unmarked condition. The spine unfortunately has a crack along a portion of the front joint, beginning and ending with a short horizontal tear. The crack does not go all the way through to the other side and thus does not affect the inner hinge which is still intact. Please see bookseller-supplied photos. Slipcase is fine. ~~ This travel expedition was occasioned by the Danish government as part of its program to foster the development of the Icelandic nation, at a time when there was little accurate knowledge about Iceland and its people. This book served to enlighten readers that "the Icelanders were people with a great cultural heritage, people who possessed magnificent literature, who had for centuries been engaged in a bitter struggle against hostile elements of nature and bad government, and who had often had to take extreme measures to keep themselves alive. 'Travels in Iceland' radically changed people's knowledge of, and attitude towards, the Iceland of that time . . . and turned a new leaf in Iceland's position in world opinion and really marks the beginning of scientific knowledge of Iceland. That above all, is its supreme value." --Introduction. In addition to the original illustrations, this edition is enhanced with 16 illustrations by Auguste Mayer from the travel book "Voyage en Islande et au Gröenland éxécuté pendants les années 1835 et 1836," by Paul Gaimard.
