Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London, 1815, illustrated frontis map, with 12 engravings, complete, 551 pp, modern half leather with marbled boards, 10.75 x 9 , 4to. In good condition. Finely rebound in half burgundy leather spine with red morocco spine label. Nicely marbled boards compliment the colors of the leather. Light wear, if any. Fresh end papers. Ex-library stamp on title page of the Rochester Theological Seminary. A few library related markings on the rear of the title, but that s all to report. Moderate foxing to end papers and front few leaves. Otherwise bright. Interior lightly toned with minor instances of age stain. Free of known marginalia. Binding tight and intact. A sound, handsome copy. Please see photos. 1st edition. Sir Henry Holland (1788-1873) was born at Knutsford, Cheshire. After an education in medicine at Edinburgh and two years residency at Guy s & St. Thomas , Holland, in 1810 began indulging in his adventurous spirit with an expedition to Iceland, ostensibly to research his doctorate thesis. Following his graduation, Holland spent eighteen months traveling to Portugal, Gibraltar, Sardinia, Sicily, the Ionian Isles, and Greece. This book constitutes an account of the eastern part of the journey. The publication was a great success, and it provided him an entree to London society which would be of great benefit to his medical career which he determined would allow him to devote two months of ever year to travel.
