Three volumes. First edition of the English translation by John Reinhold Forster. The plates are engravings of American birds and mammals. At the suggestion of Linnaeus, Swedish-born botanist Pehr Kalm travelled to North America in 1748 and spent three years investigating the flora and natural history of Pennsylvania, New York, and Canada. "Most trustworthy description of Swedish settlements in 18th century Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania" (Howes). 3 vols. 8vo. I: xvi, [8], 400 pp.; 2 plts. II: 352 pp.; 4 plts. III: viii, 310, [14] pp. Howes K5; Sabin 36989. Rebound in 20th-century cloth. Reading copies. Ex-library copies with rubber stamps, perforation stamps, bookplates, charge pockets, and spine shelving labels. Hinges (inside) of all three volumes open, and text blocks coming loose from their binding. Top and bottom ends of spine frayed, corners bumped. Old cello-tape stains. Stray pencil marks. Lacks map.
